Super Mario Odyssey Becomes Fastest Selling Mario Game Ever In U.S

Super Mario Odyssey makes Mario the best reviewed plumber around. He even turned up on time to over a million homes in America.

Mario Odyssey launched 5 days ago and it has already sold 1.1 million units in America making it the fastest selling Mario game there so far. Previously this title belonged to New Super Mario Bros (2009 Wii) which by the end of its first week, sold 838,236. Odyssey also gained the title of fastest selling Nintendo Switch game.

Mario Odyssey is also able to share the title of the best-reviewed game on Metacritic for any system of the last three years with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Mario has managed to have an average review score of 97 with 43 perfect scores – tying with ZBOTW. The games that previously had the most perfect scores were The Last of Us and Super Mario Galaxy 2 with 42 perfect scores.

Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s President and COO commented “The public continues to respond positively to Mario’s latest adventure,” continuing with “We’re also seeing sales momentum for Nintendo Switch thanks to an ever-growing catalog of games from large publishers and indie developers.”

Earlier in the week, Nintendo released its sales figures for the switch and it is quite a lot. In the July-September quarter the amounts of units sold was 2.93 million. To bring the total sold to 7.63 million. Nintendo have commented about their success and have actually raised their sales forecast from 10 million to 14 million sales in the Switch’s first year. For those who are curious, 14M is the amount the Wii U sold in its entire 5 year life span.

It seems safe to say that Nintendo are having the best success this year out of all of the publishers. Their two biggest games are now at the top of metacritic and their new console is flying off the shelves. It is reasonable to assume that Nintendo could hit their 14 million target, just as long as the keep their supply up. The Switch has been supply constrained in the past and it will only be harder now that Super Mario Odyssey is such a critical and commercial success.
